Key Points
- Nepal has banned apps like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube starting September 4.
- Apps like TikTok, Viber, and WeChat are still working in Nepal.
- The ban may make communication difficult for many people.
Why Nepal Banned Social Media Platforms
Social media is a major way people communicate. Nepal, a neighboring country of India, has banned several popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, X, Reddit, and LinkedIn, starting September 4. The reason for the ban is that these platforms failed to register with Nepal’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The ministry gave companies a 7-day period, from August 28, to complete their registration, but none of these platforms submitted their applications by the deadline. As a result, users in Nepal can no longer access these apps.
Some Platforms Are Still Working
Not all social media platforms are affected by the ban. Apps like TikTok, Viber, WeChat, Nimbuzz, and Popo Live are still working because they were already registered with the ministry. Other platforms, like Telegram and Global Diary, are still waiting for approval.
Ban Will Be Lifted After Registration
The Nepal Telecommunications Authority was instructed to block unregistered platforms starting Thursday. However, the government has said that any platform completing the registration process will be allowed to operate again on the same day.
Impact on Millions of People
This ban could make communication challenging, especially for Nepalis living abroad who rely on these platforms to stay in touch with family and friends back home. Many Nepalis live in other countries for education or work, and this ban will affect their ability to connect. Additionally, Facebook recently launched a monetization program in Nepal, allowing creators to earn money through videos, reels, and stories. The ban will impact these creators’ earnings.
